A Comparison of Heroic Behavior

Having reviewed the treatment of Achilles in three different Platonic dialogues, an obvious question arises. Why does Socrates critique Achilles in the Republic and then compare himself so directly with the great warrior in the Apology and the Crito? This is especially difficult to work through if, as I have been arguing, Plato wants to portray Socrates as being heroic like Achilles. After all, there is undeniably something compelling about the argument presented by West (1979: 154):

That Socrates should compare himself with Achilles is, of course, ludicrous. Before the judges stands an ugly old man of seventy who is about to be condemned by them to death. Achilles was the beautiful, strong youth whose courage and skill in battle had no equal. He was held in high repute by both men and gods, while the obscure Socrates is about to die a wretched death by drinking a cup of poison in jail.
